Next, and this is key, are you sliding the Joy-Con strap off in the right direction? When the Joy-Con strap is flipped, it slides off in the opposite direction from what is intuitive. When removing this you may have you hand down near the grey lock for leverage, so be very careful not to relock it while you’re trying to slide the Joy-Con strap off. She packs her creations in a “boatload of bubblewrap” and ships them out to customers. Labowitch then cleans the Etch A Sketch, seals the hole in the back and glues down the front knobs so no new lines can be created. “It’s a messy process, and it’s how I justify the cost that I ask for my work.” “It’s like a smoke … and nothing is sacred to that powder. “It involves a lot of shaking and a lot of banging on the Etch a Sketch to be as thorough as I can be,” Labowitch said. But the work is messy and Labowitch has to do it outside while wearing a mask. Cleaning out the excess powder ensures that even if the Etch A Sketch is shaken, the image on the front won’t change. Labowitch has to drill a hole in the back of the Etch a Sketch and remove the very fine aluminium powder from the inside. “If I would have done that then I wouldn’t have met you,” Labowitch explains.Ī post shared by □ Princess Etch □ finishing each piece, Labowitch has to preserve them - no easy task on an Etch a Sketch, which can be erased with the smallest of shakes. “Why here? Part of this effort is that we read and remember these stories. Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marks the anniversary of the liberation of more than 6,000 people from Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet forces, is a day of international mourning for the suffering of the millions of victims of the Holocaust, but also a day for all of us to reflect on how we can push back against the ideologies of hatred. On January 27, we honor those whose lives were forever changed by Nazism on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Read on to learn more about our accomplishments in 2020. In a year when it sometimes seemed like nothing was possible, everything was possible because of you. I am grateful to you, our incredible donors, who stepped up to help us during was no doubt a difficult period in your own lives. While 2020 wasn’t exactly the year I’d hoped and planned for, I look back now and take pride in all we accomplished despite the hurdles we faced. It is more than just building us a home: It is uplifting a community at an incredibly difficult moment in time, creating a future where both people and wildlife can thrive. This project is providing critical jobs for more than 500 individuals living near the forest whose livelihoods were greatly affected by the pandemic. But as an organization, and as a community of committed conservationists, we are working our way through these challenges with an eye to our mission of protecting the gorillas and their critical, biodiverse habitat.Īlthough we had to briefly halt construction on our new home, The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, to ensure the safety of the construction team, we are now back up and running. There have been times when the problems we faced seemed insurmountable. This year has challenged our staying power as few others have in our 53-year history. Every one of our trackers rose to the challenge going above and beyond, they transitioned to rotations in the field, which kept them away from their own families for long periods of time, because they know, as our donors know, that we never leave the gorillas. We adopted new and costly safety measures to ensure the continued health of our trackers and prevent transmission to the gorillas we protect. Our important work protecting the gorillas could not stop, but we had to ensure our staff members and the gorillas stayed healthy. Im a communications intern who reports on all the programs that Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International helps fund. The whole world changed, almost overnight, and we had to change with it. At the Fossey Fund, it was business as usual: Our trackers, staff and scientists were at work in the forests and communities of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.īut then the coronavirus began its deadly march across the globe. Many now work for government and local conservation organizations, or have gone on to pursue graduate degrees.2020 started out the same as always, with resolutions and wishes for a Happy New Year. Our education efforts are working! More than 85% of students who do their college senior thesis work with the Fossey Fund go into scientific or conservation-related careers. Deo first started as a student with us and is now a mentor to many other aspiring conservationists in Rwanda. Click here to read about our first Rwandan staff member to complete his Ph.D. We also provide scholarships for our own staff to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees, attend conservation conferences and conduct research. Click here to read about a recent group of Rwandan college students studying with and learning from Fossey Fund scientists at our campus. Our programs focus on providing classroom and hands-on training in areas such as conservation biology, research methods, lab techniques and scientific writing. Each year we host hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students and early-career professionals on our Ellen Campus for specialized trainings and internships aimed at building their skill sets. Volunteer orientation manual serves as an educational tool and reference for this training. Persons interested in volunteering in a Wisconsin prison should contact the facility Volunteer Coordinator to learn about available opportunities, and to begin the screening process.ĭAI provides comprehensive training and supervision for volunteers, to enhance facility security and public safety, and to address the unique challenges of working with inmates. Working with inmates can be a very rewarding experience. Volunteers serve as positive role models for inmates and help bridge the gap between prison facilities and the community. They assist with a many types of inmate programming such as self-help groups, education tutoring, pastoral visits, religious programming, job fairs, and recreation activities. Volunteers perform tens of thousands of service hours in DAI facilities every year. The Division of Adult Institutions recognizes the valuable contribution community volunteers make to inmate rehabilitation efforts. 11.2.2: Apple released version 11.2.2 purely to protect recent MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models from dangerous USB-C hubs and docks.See “ macOS 11.2.1 Big Sur Fixes MacBook Pro Charging Bug and sudo Vulnerability” (9 February 2021). It also fixed three important security vulnerabilities. 11.2.1: A focused release, version 11.2.1 addressed a rare but nasty bug affecting some 20 MacBook Pro models.See “ macOS 11.2 Big Sur Improves Bluetooth, Squashes Bugs” (1 February 2021). It addressed just five bugs again, but 43 security fixes. 11.2: Despite the version number suggesting new features, version 11.2 focused on bug and security fixes.See “ Apple Releases Apple Fitness+, macOS 11.1 Big Sur, iOS 14.3, iPadOS 14.3, watchOS 7.2, and tvOS 14.3” (14 December 2020). Apple’s release notes listed only five bug fixes, although we heard it also addressed problems in Rosetta 2 for M1-based Macs. 11.1: Largely a feature release, version 11.1 kept macOS in feature parity with iOS 14.3.In contrast, Big Sur has so far received only five updates, with only 11 non-security bugs explicitly addressed. By this point last year, Catalina was on its sixth update, with a seventh supplemental update coming soon. When forced by circumstance, I did upgrade my primary Mac to Catalina last April with no real problems (see “ Six Lessons Learned from Dealing with an iMac’s Dead SSD,” 27 April 2020), but Apple’s chaotic updates early in the cycle had poisoned the well for many people. I never officially recommended an upgrade to Catalina because it never felt entirely baked, even after Apple announced Big Sur. I will say that I think Big Sur has proven itself more solid than 10.15 Catalina. You don’t have to upgrade right away, but you will have to do so at some point, even if just as part of the purchase of a new Mac. The security threats that Apple addresses with updates are real, and developers continually enhance their apps to take advantage of new core capabilities that Apple builds into macOS. Honestly, though, the main reason to upgrade eventually is to stay current. And thanks in part to Apple’s acquisition of Dark Sky, the Weather widgets provide next-hour precipitation charts, severe weather alerts, and warnings of significant weather shifts. Maps gains city guides, cycling routes in a few major cities, and indoor maps of major airports and shopping centers. In Messages, you can pin favorite conversations to the top, reply directly to messages in group conversations, and search more effectively. Safari provides a customizable start page and translation capabilities. With its single column for notifications and widgets, the redesigned Notification Center may work better for you, especially with grouped notifications using space more efficiently. Big Sur’s new Control Center does a good job of consolidating numerous menu bar items into a single interface. Technology should also make life easier and support our work. Some changes will be more successful than others, but in a year or two, older versions of macOS will look dated. The user interface changes in Big Sur are a makeover the likes of which we haven’t seen in years, with Apple adding whitespace and trying to prevent the interface from distracting from your content. Why might you want to upgrade? For many people, it’s the thrill of exploring all the changes-technology should be fun. But I will say that I have upgraded with no real problems, and if you wish to upgrade, it’s generally safe to do so. So I won’t tell you that you should upgrade to Big Sur-if you choose not to, that’s entirely your prerogative. Worse, emotions often run high when it comes to macOS upgrades, with some people viewing “different” as “bad” on principle, and Big Sur’s visual redesign is quite different. It’s a hard question to answer because everyone’s situation is different-I can’t know if you might rely on an app that doesn’t work perfectly in Big Sur. “Is it safe to upgrade yet?” That’s the question I’ve been asked repeatedly since Apple first released macOS 11 Big Sur in November 2020.
